The education

Tank versus tankless in a cold-water climate

Tankless water heaters are rated on how many degrees they can raise incoming water at a given flow. That rating is generous in Texas and much less generous in Alaska, where groundwater enters the house cold year-round and colder still in late winter. A unit sized on a Lower 48 assumption will disappoint you in February — not because it's a bad appliance, but because it was specified against the wrong inlet temperature.

A conventional tank sidesteps the flow-rate question but has its own Alaskan enemy: hard well water. Sediment and scale accumulate on the bottom of the tank and on the element or burner surface, insulating the heat source and shortening life. Whichever you choose, the decision that matters most is the water feeding it — which is why we treat water heaters and water treatment as one conversation.

What you get

Specific, not generic

Everything below is something a technician actually does on the job.

  • 01

    Sized for Alaskan inlet temperature

Tankless capacity is calculated against real winter groundwater temperature and your actual fixture demand.

  • 02

    Tank and tankless both installed

We install and repair traditional tank heaters and tankless units, including Navien and Bradford White equipment.

  • 03

Water treatment from the same crew

Hardness and sediment are the main cause of premature failure. We can address the cause, not just the appliance.

  • 04

    Proper venting and gas

Combustion air, venting and gas sizing done correctly — the parts of a water heater install that get skipped.

  • 05

    Guaranteed workmanship

Every repair and installation is backed by our guarantee.

  • 06

    Free replacement estimates

No cost to find out what a proper replacement looks like for your house.

  • 07

    Descaling service

Tankless units need periodic descaling in hard water. We do it and show you the interval you need.

  • 08

    Emergency response

A leaking or failed water heater is a same-day problem, and dispatch treats it that way.

Sizing reality

Why a tankless spec sheet lies to Alaskans

Manufacturers publish flow rates at a stated temperature rise. Marketing usually quotes the number achieved with warm incoming water. Alaskan groundwater enters much colder, so the same appliance has to work far harder for the same shower temperature — meaning fewer gallons per minute at the tap. This is entirely solvable with correct sizing, and entirely unsolvable after the wrong unit is on the wall.

  • Demand calculated from actual simultaneous fixture use
  • Sizing done at winter inlet temperature, not spec-sheet conditions
  • Gas line capacity verified before quoting
  • Water treatment considered as part of the install

Common questions

Answers before you call

Something not covered? Text (907) 308-4233 and our dispatch crew will answer it.

Is tankless worth it in Alaska?

It can be excellent, but only when sized against Alaskan inlet water temperature. Our groundwater is cold, which reduces the flow rate a given unit can heat to your setpoint. Sized properly, tankless delivers endless hot water and saves space; sized on a generic spec sheet, it disappoints in February.

How long should a water heater last?

It depends far more on your water than on the brand. Hard, high-sediment well water shortens life significantly. Treated water, an intact anode rod and periodic flushing are what get a tank to the top of its expected range.

My hot water runs out faster than it used to.

Usually sediment buildup reducing effective tank volume, a failed dip tube, or a lower element that's stopped working. All three are diagnosable in one visit and often repairable.

Does a tankless unit need maintenance?

Yes — descaling, on an interval set by your water hardness. Skipping it is the most common reason a tankless unit underperforms or faults out early in a well-water home.

Can you handle the plumbing side too?

Yes. Knik Heating does plumbing as well as HVAC, so repiping, shutoffs, expansion tanks and water treatment are all handled by the same company.

Are estimates free?

Yes, estimates for water heater replacement and installation are free.
