The education

Oil, gas, and the decision in between

Plenty of Valley homes were built around an oil-fired furnace or boiler, and plenty of them still run one well. Oil equipment is durable, but it demands more of you: nozzle and filter changes, an annual cleaning that actually matters, a tank that has to be monitored and eventually replaced, and fuel you buy in large deliveries at a price that moves with the market.

Where natural gas is available, a conversion changes the whole ownership picture — no tank, no deliveries, sealed combustion, and modulating equipment that can run at partial capacity through a shoulder season. Where gas isn't available, the right answer is often a well-maintained oil appliance, not a conversion. We're happy to tell you which one you're looking at.

Straight answer

If you'd rather just talk it through, call (907) 357-6111 or text (907) 308-4233. Emergency furnace and plumbing calls are answered around the clock.

What you get

Specific, not generic

Everything below is something a technician actually does on the job.

  • 01

    Honest conversion math

Equipment, venting, gas piping and permitting all get priced together — no surprise line items after you've committed.

  • 02

    Oil equipment still serviced

If conversion isn't right for your address, we keep your oil furnace or boiler running properly.

  • 03

    Gas expertise at the source

Founder Patrick Hall spent six years as a natural gas operator in Prudhoe Bay before building this company.

  • 04

    Sealed combustion

Modern gas equipment draws combustion air from outside, which matters in a tight, cold-climate house.

  • 05

    Correct venting

Conversions change the flue picture for every appliance sharing that chimney. We address the whole system.

  • 06

    Free estimates

Conversion estimates and load calculations cost nothing.

  • 07

    Tank decommissioning planned

We walk you through what happens to the existing tank and lines as part of the scope.

  • 08

    One crew, whole job

Heating, gas piping, venting and the hot water side handled by the same company.

How it goes

From your call to a system that works

  1. 01

    Site assessment

Existing equipment, gas availability at the meter, venting routes and mechanical room layout.

  2. 02

    Heat loss calculation

The new appliance is sized to the house at Wasilla design temperatures, not to whatever was there before.

  3. 03

    Scoped written estimate

Equipment, gas train, venting, electrical and disposal, itemized, at no cost.

  4. 04

    Installation

Old appliance removed, new equipment set, piped, vented and commissioned.

  5. 05

    Commissioning and handoff

Combustion analyzed, controls configured, and the system walked through with you before we leave.

Founder's background

Six years on the North Slope, running gas

Knik Heating was founded by Patrick Hall, an HVAC professional with over twenty years in the industry, including six years working as a natural gas operator in Prudhoe Bay. That's an unusual resume for a residential heating company, and it shows up in how gas work gets specified here: pressures verified, trains built properly, combustion measured rather than assumed.

  • 20+ years of HVAC experience behind the company
  • Six years as a natural gas operator at Prudhoe Bay
  • Veteran-owned and operated
  • BBB-accredited with an A+ rating

Common questions

Answers before you call

Something not covered? Text (907) 308-4233 and our dispatch crew will answer it.

Is natural gas available at my address?

Availability varies street by street across the Valley — some Wasilla and Palmer neighborhoods are served and others aren't. Checking the meter and the utility's service map is the first step of any conversion assessment, and we do it before quoting anything.

Can I keep my existing ductwork?

Usually yes. We check duct sizing and static pressure against the new equipment; if the ducts are undersized for the airflow, we'll tell you what needs modifying rather than installing a furnace that can't breathe.

What happens to the oil tank?

Decommissioning and removal are handled as part of the project scope and discussed with you up front, so there's no ambiguity about what's left behind.

Is a conversion worth it if my oil furnace still works?

Sometimes it isn't, and we'll say so. A sound oil appliance with years of life left, at an address with no gas service, is not a conversion candidate. The estimate exists to answer that question honestly.

How long does a conversion take?

Most residential changeovers are completed in one to two days on site once permitting and equipment are in hand. We discuss heat during the changeover before scheduling.

Do you still service oil equipment?

Yes. Oil furnace service, cleaning and repair remain part of what we do across the Valley.
