The education

What a heat pump actually does in an Alaskan winter

A heat pump moves heat instead of making it, which is why it can deliver more energy than it consumes. The honest caveat is that its output and efficiency fall as outdoor temperature drops. Cold-climate models hold usable capacity far below freezing, but no heat pump in Southcentral Alaska should be specified without a plan for the coldest weeks of the year.

The configuration that works here is a heat pump doing the heavy lifting through the long shoulder seasons — September through November, March through May, where most annual heating hours actually live — backed by your existing gas furnace or boiler for deep cold. You get efficient heat for most of the season, cooling in summer from the same box, and a heating system that still works at -25°F.

Straight answer

If you'd rather just talk it through, call (907) 357-6111 or text (907) 308-4233. Emergency furnace and plumbing calls are answered around the clock.

What you get

Specific, not generic

Everything below is something a technician actually does on the job.

  • 01

    Heating and cooling in one

A single outdoor unit covers the shoulder-season heat and the June cooling most Valley homes now want.

  • 02

    Honest cold-weather expectations

We'll show you where capacity falls off and how the backup takes over, rather than overselling the technology.

  • 03

    Ductless where ducts don't exist

Hydronic-heated homes, additions, shops and bonus rooms all get conditioned without new ductwork.

  • 04

    Zone-by-zone control

Each head runs independently, so you're not paying to condition rooms nobody's in.

  • 05

    Quiet operation

Indoor heads run far quieter than a furnace cycling a whole-house blower.

  • 06

    Proper cold-climate mounting

Outdoor units are set on stands clear of snow depth and drift, with defrost drainage considered.

  • 07

    Free estimates

Installation estimates and system design cost nothing.

  • 08

    Integrated with your existing heat

Controls are set so the heat pump and your furnace or boiler cooperate instead of fighting.

How it goes

From your call to a system that works

  1. 01

    Define the goal

Cooling, cheaper shoulder-season heat, conditioning a space with no ducts — the goal drives the design.

  2. 02

    Design and placement

Head locations, line set routing, outdoor unit height above snow, and electrical capacity.

  3. 03

    Free written estimate

Equipment, install scope and expected behavior in deep cold, all in writing.

  4. 04

    Installation

Heads mounted, line sets run and evacuated properly, condenser set on a snow stand.

  5. 05

    Controls and handoff

Changeover setpoints configured with your backup heat, then walked through with you.

Design honesty

Where the heating hours actually are

The instinct is to judge a heat pump by how it behaves at the coldest hour of the year. That's the wrong test. The majority of a Wasilla heating season is spent in weather where a cold-climate heat pump runs efficiently, and only a handful of weeks sit deep enough to hand off entirely to the backup. We design to the whole season and tell you exactly where the changeover happens.

  • Changeover setpoint chosen with you, not buried in a controller
  • Backup heat kept intact for deep cold and outages
  • Snow-clearance stands standard on outdoor equipment
  • Cooling capability included at no extra equipment cost

Common questions

Answers before you call

Something not covered? Text (907) 308-4233 and our dispatch crew will answer it.

Do heat pumps actually work in Alaska?

Cold-climate models produce usable heat well below freezing, and most of Southcentral's heating hours happen in the 20°F to 45°F range where they perform well. What they should not be is your only heat source at -25°F. Paired with your existing furnace or boiler, they work very well here.

Will it replace my furnace?

Generally no, and we don't recommend that it should. The right design uses the heat pump for the bulk of the season and keeps your gas appliance as backup for deep cold and for redundancy when the power goes out.

How many indoor heads do I need?

One per space you want independently controlled. A common Valley setup is one in the main living area and one in the primary bedroom — the two rooms where comfort complaints actually originate.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

On a stand, high enough to clear typical snow depth and drift for your site, away from roof shed lines, with clearance for defrost meltwater. Mounting is not an afterthought here — it's most of why installs fail.

Is a mini-split loud?

Indoor heads are noticeably quieter than a forced air furnace cycling. The outdoor unit makes a low hum similar to an AC condenser, and placement accounts for bedroom windows.

Can it cool in summer too?

Yes — that's one of the strongest reasons to install one here. The same equipment reverses to provide cooling through the long, bright Alaskan summer days.
